Origin
Being rarest among the carbon family, black diamond are said to be originated on the earth 3.5 billion years ago. Infernal heat and pressure, under the earth's surface transformed the carbon atoms into crystals. Through the repeated volcanic eruptions they were able to reach the earth's surface around one million years ago.

Characteristic Appearance
Having a specific gravity of 3.1 – 3.3, black Diamonds are opaque in their appearance, virtually without cleavages. They are full of criss-crossing scratch marks containing black deposits of Sulfides which are responsible for their opaque texture.

Brazil is the major source of this black variety of diamond. Generally, they occur in irregular and rounded carbonado fragments. Among them, some crystals are denser having the lesser intensity of flaws. These crystals are rare and produce higher quality black diamonds after a good amount of polishing.

Black diamonds are really rare and are found with comparatively less inclusions so that they look translucent or semitransparent. However, black diamonds comprises of heavily flawed surface. Most part of the black diamond is actually covered by grey and dark grey elements.

Importance of Black Diamond
Diamonds come in different colors from a colorless, crystal stone to the yellowish tint stone that has its own charm and attraction. All colored diamonds belong to the carbon family. The difference of the color is the result of the different molecular structures of the crystals. A black diamond means it is in an intermediary stage between graphite and pure diamond.

However, due to some white diamonds with black inclusions, black diamonds are also misunderstood as a white diamond. These diamonds are much less valuable than the black diamonds.

Because of their exclusive color and formation, black diamonds are the most appropriate example of the corporatization of fashion. Due to this, leading jewelry companies are shifting their interest towards this beautiful stone to craft some amazing jewelry. Though, the rareness of the stone is an impediment in the growth of the market of black diamond jewelry.
